The 'Pop Team Epic' Director is Just as Confused as You Are

Pop Team Epic may have a dedicated manga following, but anime fans are baffled by the series.

It’s divisive, with some people wondering if Pop Team Epic is a type of satire or just a bunch of randomness. Turns out, not even the adaptation’s director is sure.

Jun Aoki, the anime’s director and script composer, confessed to a magazine that he didn’t read Pop Team Epic before agreeing to work on the adaptation. It’s a rookie mistake made a young director; Aoki’s only other work is 2005’s short-format series Oshiruko – The Summer Time Mischief.

After checking out the manga, Aoki initially thought that Pop Team Epic would end up being “a typical easy web manga” to adapt. After exploring the series more, Aoki jokingly said he regretted agreeing to direct the adaptation.

Aoki did reveal that Pop Team Epic is difficult to direct since there is so much variety and that has been a challenge since he’s used to working on commercials, shorts, and openings. However, he reassured fans that series creator Bkub Okawa is supervising every single episode and has been providing ideas.

Pop Team Epic

Pop Team Epic is a self-described kuso series (which is slang for shit), and is infamous for its absurd humor. It’s only fitting that not even the anime’s director understands what’s going on.
