[:en]The Ancient Magus' Bride Episode 4 Review: Everything must have a beginning.

Danger! Unfortunately, someone just had to go and ruin the ritual. True to what I hoped in Episode 2, we finally met some sorcerers! I wish we could’ve met some that were kinder, though, but given that it was kind of foreshadowed in the beginning of this episode (that the cats don’t like sorcerers), looks like most of them are not the nicest bunch. Kind of makes me wonder if the girl with the red jacket’s purpose in throwing Chise to the sea was so she can come in contact with the filth? Or was it to get rid of her since she’s a Sleigh Beggy? Though, given that our fears in the previous episode about her lifespan appears to be true, that might not be a problem in the near future.

Themes & Trivia

Protecting: Molly was willing to give some of her lives just so she can protect her fellow cats, but most of all her girl. Matthew was willing to do something monstrous just to find a way to save his beloved. Mina asked Chise to end hers and Matthew’s lives just so they can finally find peace. Goes to show that if something is truly important to you, you’re willing to sacrifice yourself for it.

‘Everything must have a beginning’: This is a quote by Mary Shelley, mentioned in her novel, Frankenstein. Whether this relates to the start of unraveling secrets or their collision with sorcerers, we just don’t know. What’s sure is that something big is starting, and it’s definitely the result of something in the past.

Cats and nine lives: Where did this famous myth come from? Well, given that cats often land on their feet or survive disasters that would’ve probably killed others, it’s not hard to believe. It is also mentioned in the proverb ‘A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays, and for the last three he stays.

I think that the show gets better and better every week! I totally enjoyed it! All throughout, I couldn’t help but feel like I was on a magical journey with Chise, as if I was really immersed in it. The writing felt more polished, the mystery was quite thought-provoking, and the animation was lovely. With the latter, the parts that stood out to me were Molly (seriously that cat is beautiful), Mina’s interaction with Chise underwater, and Chise’s ritual. We’re also introduced to more things that build the world of the show, and it just made me look forward to discovering even more! The end of the episode made sure of that, given the suspenseful cliffhanger it gave us. To the staff: good job!

Cats have nine lives…but YOLO

Ahh, I hope Chise doesn’t end up losing trust in Elias! However, while I would love to say that they’re already having a good relationship, aside from his usual show of care for her, he actually has to be more open with her, don’t you agree? I also hope that the problem will be solved safely and quickly!
