Kenichi Sonoda’s Riding Bean is coming back thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.
The Bean Bandit campaign managed to surpass it’s original $136,930 and has so far raised $141,681 with 13 days to spare! Sonoda and his staff now have enough funds to create a 5 minute short, but they’ve just announced new stretch goals. A 20-minute anime will be created if $380,000 is raised and a 45-minute anime will be created if $800,000 is raised.
Sonoda turned to Kickstarter for the Bean Bandit project because he felt “the Japanese animation industry does not understand the real potential of the series.” As such, he wants to create an anime that intense and provocative without worrying focusing on profit.
Sonoda rose to fame in the mid-80s and influenced the aesthetic of the era. Some of the projects he worked on included Gall Force, Bubblegum Crisis, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, and Otaku no Video. He also created Gunsmith Cats.
The original Riding Bean is a 45-minute OVA and a 4-chapter manga. It follows Bean Bandit and Rally Vincent as they are framed for kidnapping the daughter of a powerful businessman. While fleeing from the police, they discover a conspiracy involving the businessman.
Sonoda and his team plan to have Bean Bandit animated in time for Anime Central 2019, which will be held on May 17th through May 19th.
