Gakuen Babysitters Episode 1 Review: Part 1

Is this the cutest anime ever? Yes. Does it involve cute baby toddlers? Yes. Does it have a variety of bishounen for eye candy? Yes. Does it have drama? Oh, yes. This must be the most adorable anime I’ve watched in a while and needless to say that Gakuen Babysitters (School Babysitters) is probably going to be my favorite title of this season.

Japanese Original Episode Title: その1

Plot

Ryuchi and Kotaro are two brothers who lost their parents at a very early age due to a plane crash. They have been taken in by the old chairwoman of Ryuchi’s new school, where apart from going there to study, he was ‘forced’ to join the Babysitters club. In this club, they basically have to babysit the kids of the teachers that are working in that school, and because of inefficient funds, they are in desperate need of staff. So Ryuchi takes Kotaro there and starts playing around with the kids and getting to know them, but poor Kotaro sits in the back trying to read a book. When the parents come and pick up their kids, Ryuchi realizes that Kotaro has a high fever and rushes to the hospital. The crisis was aborted and the old chairwoman came to pick them up. Next day Ryuchi starts going to classes in his new school and also starts working in the babysitters club.

Episode Highlights

Saikawa is the best: He is going to be my favorite character, I can feel it. First of all, he is voiced by the ONE AND ONLY Daisuke Ono. He is voicing a character that has almost the same attitude with Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler). Oh Daisuke, you and your variety! Second, he has humor and he gets easily emotional. The scene where he said to Ryuchi and Kotaro to carry them up his back because he didn’t have a car had me going like: ‘LOOK AT YOU BEING A JOKER!’ Yeah… uhm I am not biased, not biased at all!

The naming train: How bloody cute was that? Singing their names in order to introduce themselves. Aw Lord… And I don’t even like babies that much, what the hell is going on?

The ‘calling Dad’ scene: Emotionally wrecked in seconds. Poor kid… I am pretty sure that this anime is not going to be all about babies and handsome boys. The sadness is lurking.

Themes & Trivia

Opening and ending themes: The opening song ‘Endless happy world’ is performed by Saikawa’s voice actor, Daisuke Ono, and the ending song ‘Oshiete-yo’ is performed by Kotaro Nishiyama and Yuichiro Umehara’s unit Hyorotto Danshi. Kotaro Nishiyama is the voice actor of Ryuichi Kashima and Yuichiro Umehara is voicing his classmate Hayato Kamitani. Hyorotto Danshi is a voice acting unit based on the radio show Kotaro Nishiyama & Yuichiro Umehara Hyorotto Danshi. The show is very popular, has a great following, and is quite fun to listen to. Comments

I loved it. I don’t like the fact that Kotaro looks so sad all the time, but if he actually comprehends that his parents are no longer there, then it’s completely understandable… Ryuchi, do you think your babysitter club activities was a good thing to mention in your first introduction to your class? Thank god this is a shoujo anime and you are not going to be bullied about this… Also for some weird reason, the old chairwoman reminded me of two chairwoman characters from a really old school anime called Kabamaru Igano. They don’t look alike at all but something about them made me do the comparison.

This anime is nice and has a very unique feel to it. You don’t get to see cute boys with babies in the same concept very often and the fact that it has a dramatic plot gives even more substance to it. The vibes of the series reminded me a little bit of Usagi Drop, an anime that I also really enjoyed and definitely recommend. But besides everything else, Gakuen Babysitters made me feel nice and kind of happy. It relaxed me and took me away for a while (until the really sad scene with Ryuchi crying). The anime is so pleasant to watch and it definitely makes you think of only one thing: How can the babies be so cute?

The naming train

I really look forward to the next episode! As I mentioned before, it looks like it’s going to be a fun anime to watch with the necessary eye candy and drama to it, so what more can you ask for? Plus it has cute babies everywhere. Cheers!
