Food Wars! The Third Plate Episode 7 Review: It Begins

In continuation to last week’s exciting turn of events, more dramatic changes begin taking place in Totsuki. The school that was once a creative culinary hell for students and was expelling people like throwing out garbage is now going to be a non-creative and less hellish institution where less people will get expelled. Okay.

Japanese Original Episode Title: 火蓋は切られた

Before we get started, let me just say that there is no cooking, food or boob imagery in this episode. Having established this, let us move on.

Erina is hiding from her father in the Polar Star dormitory. He, on the other hand, being too busy to give a shit about his million-dollar daughter, is announcing that all independent organizations within the college (such as research societies) will be dismantled, and the college will now be operating on a rigid high to low pyramid hierarchy type of structure, where instead of devising their own recipes, student will have to follow the instructions and compromise to the specs set by the college administration and consequently, the elite ten. Sounds like most educational systems to me, not implying that this is a good thing… Azami promises less expulsions and the potential for not very talented students to get a glimpse of the recipes created by superior chefs, and learn from them. Some students are happy with that; others, not so much. Sounds pretty mild, until club members are being forced to get kicked out of the premises they used to operate within and start challenging Eizan, ninth seat, the animal-print-shirt douche running the evictions to Shokugekis in order to get their club’s autonomy back. Eizan accepts, but demonstrates to the whole college that Shokugekis are now pointless, as he had bought off all the judges. BUYING OFF JUDGES? PREPOSTEROUS!

The judges won’t even try off the food the contestants are making and are immediately granting wins to Eizan, which makes the whole Shokugeki concept pointless (which makes me wonder – why not cancel the tradition of Shokugekis altogether instead of having to buy off judges everytime… that doesn’t make any sense at all) so all clubs withdraw their challenges, except for Yukihira, who, trying to keep his dormitory alive, decides to give it a go anyway – probably having some sort of ace up his sleeve that will turn the tables and grant him victory, as usual. Very realistic.

Episode Highlights

This is serious: No more fun and games for Totsuki academy. Everything is dark and serious now. Things are getting out of hand and the culinary world is falling apart. Noice the dramatic music and worrisome ambience of this whole episode. This is serious.

Worst character award: Rindou Kobayashi is just not, like, not my type of character at all. Those neko teeth and facial expressions, her constant cheer and carefree bitchiness enrages me. Stay out of my screen please.

Shutting down the dormitory: Does this make any sense to anyone? I mean not just the fact that Polar Star is the only dormitory within college grounds (where does everyone else live?!) but also how they are taking down student accommodation facilities where students are actually sleeping? Anyone?

Themes & Trivia

Ultra-shonen logic: DISAGREEMENT? Just sort out everything with a Shokugeki/card game/battle/stitching contest. It is the answer to everything, and completely legit.

Still not excited

It might just be me but I’d rather watch food porn and not irrational reforming-education school drama. If only watching shows like this would make actual students value their education more and fight for the preservation of its quality…
