Devil's Line Episode 10 Review: Ego Defense

This episode felt like there wasn’t even a pause in the dialogues. So many things were mentioned and nothing really happened apart from the fact that Anzai remembered Kikuhara from his past and well… Jason.

Japanese Original Episode Title: エゴディフェンス

Rapist sensei provokes Anzai in the tube to transform and throws blood at him, so his ‘subordinate’ can film it and upload it online. Despite his efforts in bringing the ‘real’ devil out of him, Anzai is pretty balanced at the beginning but ends up transforming after all and Ishimaru comes to the rescue. Later on, Ishimaru starts taunting Anzai to transform so he can learn more about his abilities and skills, showing that he actually has a great knowledge of devils. Sniper chan along with hacker boy help them find out all the rest of the members of the CCC but unfortunately, the list of the members is rather unclear. As Anzai transforms he gets memories of his past that include Kikuhara. When he talks to Kano sensei about it he tells him that he probably can’t remember them clearly because they must have been traumatic. Anzai and the rest go to a scene where Kikuhara is present and Anzai tries to confront him but without gaining any additional informationAtIn the end of the episode, we see Ishimaru calling Kikuhara to report to him, calling himself Jason.

Episode Highlights

Rapist-sensei, the social outcast: Okay this guy deserves absolute shit and I am glad that his life went to hell after everything that happened. The social media outrage that the anti-devil vigilantes try to do is actually very clever for plot development even though once again in the anime everything is executed so badly.

Ishimaru is a bad guy: Okay, I don’t think that anyone was blown away from this revelation. Kikuhara was the one that appointed him as an F squad leader in the first place, so obviously, he was not legit. But he being Jason makes everything more intriguing, I am looking forward to see what he is going to do and why Kikuhara wants him there.

Anzai and Kikuhara: We knew that Kikuhara had something to do with his dad so it’s not a surprise that he f*cked with Anzai as a kid as well. Kikuhara looks really sick in the head and I honestly can’t wait to see the reason behind all his craziness.

Themes & Trivia

The next episode’s title: The title of the next episode is: Ouroboros. The ouroboros or uroborus is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. Originating in ancient Egyptian iconography, the ouroboros entered western tradition via Greek magical tradition and was adopted as a symbol in Gnosticism and Hermeticism and most notably in alchemy. Via medieval alchemical tradition, the symbol entered Renaissance magic and modern symbolism, often taken to symbolize introspection, the eternal return or cyclicality, in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself. It also represents the infinite cycle of nature’s endless creation and destruction, life and death. The term derives from Ancient Greek: οὐροβόρος, from οὐρά (oura), “tail”+ βορά (bora), “food”, from βιβρώσκω (bibrōskō), “I eat”.

I felt kind of awkward when everyone came in and saw Ishimaru on top of Anzai. And on top of that, Lee was outside the door watching them. It just felt so awkwardly wrong. Anzai said that the reason he hates devils has to do with Kikuhara. Who knows what that charming psycho made him go through as a kid… And he definitely did something bad to his dad as well, no way had he got the devil serial killer name all by himself.

One last thing, the fact that Ishimaru is called Jason is certainly not a good thing. First of all, I thought that their codenames were hierarchical and Jason doesn’t even have a number on his, which makes me think that he is probably an absolute beast that is named that way as a reference to Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. He will probably make a hell of a mess in the nest few episodes to come.

I actually like it.

Tsukasa is so retarded sometimes. When Sniper-chan was talking with Anzai and he blamed her that it was her fault that Tsukasa had that scar on her face, she goes all out and says: ‘I actually like it’. That girl’s brain is honestly a mystery. The show is almost over and I hope that we are not going to be left with major plot holes just because the makers of the anime didn’t have enough time to explain everything.

NEXT TIME: Ouroburos
