Japanese Title: ロード オブ ヴァーミリオン 紅蓮の王
Tokyo 2030. Suddenly, high-frequency resonance sounds are observed around Tokyo and at the same time, the city is surrounded by red mist. Whether human beings or animals, everyone loses consciousness when hearing this sound. All governmental functions of the capital temporarily relocate to Osaka. This phenomenon is said to be an unknown virus, and because the government was concerned about further epidemics, Tokyo was closed down. However, six days after the phenomenon called ‘Dai Kyoumei’ (lit. great resonance), the people and animals who had lost consciousness suddenly awoke as if nothing had happened. Soon after the blocked city of Tokyo gradually regains its functions as a town, various abnormal incidents begin to occur and the lives of people become stranger and stranger. Meanwhile, the young people awaken to unleash the power hidden in the blood, ‘Eiketsu no Utsuwa’. They’re being pulled by each other’s powers to inevitable encounters, communicate their thoughts, sharpen their lives and are inexplicably drawn together into a harsh destiny.
Sometimes, I find myself apologizing for being overly critical of an anime. And then I remember that this is just our opinion… and what I thought of Lord of Vermilion was not very flattering. I am not a fan of supernatural action anime that have so many characters that you need a notebook to keep track of everyone. I am not a fan of stereotyped characters with weird hair who are somehow connected in a fight that will determine the fate of the universe. I am also not a fan of shounen if that wasn’t obvious. But, after learning that the anime is based on a card game by Square Enix, everything fell into place. I’m not the intended audience for this anime. I never was. This is an anime for the fans of the game and those interested in this kind of arcade-based fantasy collectible card game and in over-the-top fantasy battles that will probably drag for the whole 12 episodes of the season.
