It seems the previous two episodes were just a fluke. We are back to the same disjointed, convoluted mess I have come to associate with this series… pity. This week’s episode had me scratching my head from start to finish. The lack of setup is really taking its toll on the overall narrative. I have no clue where this train wreck of an anime is heading.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 㐧捌刻
Sugawara has finally revealed his true intentions for the Genuine Love Society by giving himself over to the Stasis world and becoming a Herald. Meanwhile, Juri and co. devise a plan to retrieve Tsubasa from the bad guys.
The outsides match the insides: Sugawara finally shows his true colors by giving himself over to the Stasis world and becoming a living Herald. The transformation changes his appearance significantly, giving him a much more grotesque visage.
We all float: Because of the nature of the Stasis world, when stalled objects are thrown or moved, rather than being affected by gravity, they remain suspended in mid-air.
It’s all in the lips: Whenever a character, namely Sugawara, says something especially sinister, the camera will focus on that character’s lips.
It was all a trap: Sugawara sets a trap for the Yukawas in order to steal a bit of Grandpa’s blood for his own Stasis experiments…
Themes & Trivia
The Art of War: Grandpa Yukawa quotes from Sun Tzu’s Art of War, an ancient Chinese war strategy guide. Each chapter of the 13 chapters focuses on a specific aspect of warfare.
Protein = Muscle: In order to sustain his new Herald-infused body, Sugawara ingests a high protein diet. This may have its roots in the real world belief that protein-rich diets significantly boosts muscle growth.
No witnesses: Sugawara kills everyone who witnesses his transformation as a means of testing out the capabilities of his new body.
We’re all on the same side: In order to take down Sugawara, Shoko and the Yukawa’s once again team up.
I have no clue what the hell is going on with this show anymore. All I know for sure is that Sugawara is bad and Juri and co. are good. Everything else is still shrouded in shadows. Where did the Yukawa Stasis power come from? Who knows! What are the rules of the Stasis world? No one seems to really know. Is there an end goal for Kokkoku? I’m not even sure anymore.
This stopped being amusing five episodes ago. I really need some kind of payoff soon, because this aimless meandering and disconnected storytelling is driving me absolutely mad!
Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?
Don’t get me wrong, Sugawara is a pretty OP villain and it is a shame he has to be stuck in this miserable excuse for an anime. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Kokkoku is an anime with an interesting premise but poor execution…. Does anyone know how many more episodes are left?
