Japanese visual novel developer and publisher Front Wing announced that the upcoming instalment in their Grisaia series, Grisaia: Phantom Trigger, will be receiving a TV anime adaptation. The adaptation’s official website has launched revealing the first visual and staff members.
The original character designer of the series, Akio Watanabe (Bakemonogatari, The World God Only Knows), will also be handling the anime’s character designs and is the Chief Animation Director. Ryuichiro Yamakawa (Grisaia no Kajitsu) is set to return as producer for the new anime.
Grisaia: Phantom Trigger will be the fourth instalment of the Grisaia visual novel series, but is considered volume 3, following 2011’s Grisaia no Kajitsu (The Fruit of Grisaia), 2012’s Grisaia no Meikyuu (The Labyrinth of Grisaia) and 2013’s Grisaia no Rakuen (The Eden of Grisaia).
Grisaia: Phantom Trigger will release on Windows platforms on July 28.
Here is synopsis of volume 3:
Following the Heath Oslo incident, the existence of the US-Japanese anti-terror organization CIRS has become a matter of public knowledge. CIRS has been rebuilt from the ground up, and its most covert functions spun off to a new agency: SORD (Social Ops, Research & Development).
Following the Heath Oslo incident, the existence of the US-Japanese anti-terror organization CIRS has become a matter of public knowledge. CIRS has been rebuilt from the ground up, and its most covert functions spun off to a new agency: SORD (Social Ops, Research & Development). The goal of SORD is to train a new generation of operatives to defend the country against future threats. To that end, the organization has established a series of schools up and down the country. Mihama Academy, more-or-less left to rot after its abrupt closure, has been given new purpose as one such ‘specialist training school’.
This new incarnation of Mihama Academy is home to a diverse group of students, who every day work to polish their unusual skills – sometimes on the job. Mihama now entrusts the misfit girls who attend it with guns and live ammunition. Paying their own safety no heed, these students are again and again plunged into dangerous extrajudicial missions – all for the good of the realm.

Grisaia no Kajitsu: Le Fruit De La Grisaia is a visual novel by Front Wing that originally released on February 15 2011 for Windows. The novel features character designs from Akio Watanabe and Fumio (Tomoyo After ~It’s a Wonderful Life~), scenarios written by Nachi Kio, Ryuta Fujisaki, Yoshigazu Kuwashima, and Kazuya, with Elements Garden (Mouretsu Pirates) composing the music. The visual novel won the 2011 Moe Game Awards grand prize, as well as various other awards for its scenario and music. Two sequels followed the release of the original, 2012’s Grisaia no Meikyuu (The Labyrinth of Grisaia) and 2013’s Grisaia no Rakuen(The Eden of Grisaia).. All VNs received an anime adaptation by 8-Bit (IS: Infinite Stratos, Tokyo Ravens) in 2014 and 2015. The games were recently released on Steam by publisher Sekai Project.
Here is a synopsis of Grisaia no Kajitsu from MAL:
Mihama Academy—on the surface, a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them; in actuality, an orchard-cum-prison built to preserve fruit that has fallen too far from its tree. Whatever the circumstances behind its establishment, Mihama Academy is at present home to five female students, all with their own reasons for “enrollment.” For better or worse, each girl has established a routine obliging of her current situation; life moves at an idle, yet accommodating pace within the walls of Mihama.
Yet with the arrival of the institute’s first male student, the nearly preposterously opaque Kazami Yuuji, the students at Mihama begin to fall out of step with their predetermined rhythms. Will Yuuji prove to be the element the girls around him needed to take hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome?
An anime adaptation has been announced for Grisaia: Phantom Trigger, volume 3 of the Grisaia series, which will have its visual novel release on July 28. Further details about the anime will be revealed at a later date.
